George Carlin, 1937-2008

George Carlin was victimized a few years ago by the same band of Hallmark Card Forwardistas who preyed on the late Kurt Vonnegut. The story was always the same--that their wives had died, they'd changed their ways and become so sunny and happy that you could not believe it. In the days before YouTube, you used to see this kind of crap ALL THE TIME. Thankfully, it was bullshit. There is plenty of evidence that George Carlin was as sharp as ever at the end. The boss's partner (i.e., THE ACTUAL BOSS of these parts) loves George Carlin on stuff. I overheard her the other day complaining about all the stuff we have around here, which is a signal to hide all the important stuff. I usually try to explain to her that it's hard to run a publishing and guerilla p.r. empire in a three-bedroom house, even if the entire unpaid intern workforce lives in the garage. When one of these stuff storms strikes, we tidy up as best we can and hope it blows over without doing any permanent damage. Anyway, here's Carlin on stuff for her. Carlin on the Countdown show last year was absolutely right. It's a mark of something profound that Keith Olbermann, a sportscaster, emerged with the fake news shows as the only real newscasters in the Bush II era. More about Countdown in another post. There's Carlin on being dumb and bitter in America. I did not know that the last time he voted was for McGovern in 1972. It's a hard choice to pick just one video to play in this post, but Touched by an Atheist is really funny and nicely answers the Hallmark Card Conspiracy. "Heaven is like Ireland without the pipe bombs."
