Stupor Bowl Memories (1967)

Super Bowl 1 took place on January 15, 1967. It came at the end of a difficult year. I was exhausted at the end of the summer of 1966 and passed on going back to UofT that fall. You cannot imagine the exciting academic adventure I missed, but that’s another story. When Christmas rolled around, I suggested to my mother and father that we could buy a family Christmas present instead of running around looking for things that might cheer us up. I suggested this GE colour TV. We could have it in time to welcome colour tv transmission to Canada. We all agreed. It was amazing to see Bobby Gimby prancing around in colour, NOT. It didn’t take too long to get used to colour. We rigged up an aerial to improve reception. One of the first things I actually remember was tuning into the Super Bowl. It was a beautiful sunny day in Pasadena(?). The grass was green. It was NFL football, but there was one exciting play that stood out—Willie Wood’s interception of a Len Dawson pass that cemented the Packers win over the Chiefs. There are some old FB posts about Wood and football after SB I. Sadly the Packers no longer think it’s important to have the colour video of Wood’s interception on their site. The tech folks at Joe Briggs Place have found a colour version and uploaded it here. All I previously could find was a still picture of Wood during the game, so I pasted it into the TV screen in the ad. A British newspaper does have the video of the interception in black and white. You can see the interception in glorious colour here:

One of the late nighters said that this was the first game he could remember asking people to keep the noise down because he couldn't hear the poem.

As well, the the NFL really did some ground-breaking public health work just to have a season. https://www.nytimes.com/video/sports/100000007560854/nfl-2020-season-covid.html?smid=url-share
