The week that Rupert Murdoch decided to challenge The Daily Show and The Colbert Report with his own brand of devil-may-care comedy is a good time to mark the decision of people at the National Review to nominate Rush Limbaugh for the Nobel Peace Prize. Who wants to be a neo-con when you can be a comedian? The National Review "brains trust" has already tried to take the Comedy Network by storm. Dinesh D’Souza took his new book, The Enemy At Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11, to The Colbert Report. A Princeton grad named Ramesh Ponnuru, who is also a National Review staffer, took his book, The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life, to both shows to hilarious effect. But Limbaugh for a Nobel Prize? The best joke of a sad year so far.

These days, trying to identify the most outrageous news story of the month presents an embarrassment of riches. Just think of what we have to choose from. The options range all the way from the U.S. Senate debating about whether to have a debate on President Bush's "surge" of troops in Iraq, to President Bush telling us we're making "slow progress" in that death-ravaged country, to Vice President Cheney proclaiming that the administration has achieved "enormous successes" there, to the neocon renaissance ginning up a war with Iran. ….More here …
