The unthinkable happened yesterday evening. Our main system gave up the ghost with nary a warning. We’re in the middle of a small riding association resuscitation effort that was not going well. We hope that the piece of malware that arrived in the last few days had nothing to do with the disaster. And we hope that the data is safe. We have pretty good backups, from our upgrade to XP in the summer. However, if anything is compromised we’ll lose a lot. I would not like to be the sap that sent us the Christmas e-greeting with the links to the Russian spammeister and diet-supplement merchant. I know who he is (i.e. the sap) and I’ve been keeping the specific news from the boss and his partner. They can be hotheads about stuff like this You’d like to think that no comrade in the party of humanity would ever do anything to hurt another. Hmm. Maybe that quaint notion died with the Canadian Socialist League and Uncle Phil.
This is how the boss described the situation:
Hope you've all had a wonderful break. Unfortunately, my trusty old pony (my Optiplex GX 240) stepped in a a gopher hole a few days ago and is in the course of being put out of its blue-screen agony, carefully so as to preserve the important data in the saddlebags. So right now I'm computerless and awaiting for a passing cattle drive with a good remuda of reliable mounts and a trail boss willing to deal. It's a big decision for me. The Optiplex arrived here about 8 years ago and was getting a little long in the tooth. Jennifer is letting me drop by for breakfast most mornings to answer my mail. I'll print this up and try to make an analog decision before tomorrow.
We’ll keep you posted.
