JBTV: Snow Days in Toronto

Two days after returning to Toronto from the annual ski weekend in Algonquin Park. The snowstorm to end all snowstorms (aka “The Storm of the Century”) visited Toronto. The authorities closed all the schools, managers and supremos decided to leave their SUVs in the garage and work from home, and there was a run on snow shovels and salt at Home Hardware. The actual result (pictures to follow) was easily dealt with on our street in about half an hour. Apparently, Ian Brown (one of the few writers I miss from the Globe and Mail) decided to heed the warnings and cross-country ski to work at the Globe. Apparently, there was not quite enough snow. He says of the experience: “A blizzard may transform the city visually – for once, Toronto becomes beautiful to look at – but it certainly doesn’t reduce the number of jackasses who live here.” The Mercer Special Report from a few years ago captures the spirit of our town these days.
