There are lots of questionable milestones being celebrated this summer. Toronto’s idiot mayor turned 43 at the beginning of the summer; someone must have baked him a cake. Hi dimwit brothers decided to buy him an AnnRombeyRamblerMobile. And there’s the insane Harpoplican War of 1812 Bicentennial. One milestone that has crept up on us is Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday on July 14 (today). Folkways has put together a three-CD boxed set of his work. Douglas Brinkley and Johnny Depp are hard at work getting a novel Guthrie wrote about the dustbowl in 1947 called House of Earth finally published. There will probably be some short clips on the news just like there were when he died in 1967. The Democracy Now segment below deals with Guthrie in more depth. I learned a few things I didn’t know before. It is well worth watching:
Addendum: It also would have been Northrop Frye’s 100th birthday today.
