Joe Briggs Cooks: From Axe Handles to Cheesy Chicken Thighs

You could not design as neat a bit of howling asymmetry as this. The US Supreme Court's cracker majority, led by that Harvard Law School grad who could not remember the presidential oath in January 2009, decided that parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1964 were no longer necessary. The American South is apparently no longer the Cracker Kingdom it was when Lester Maddox stood in the doorway of his eatery to deny black people the right to enjoy the Pickrick Grill house specialty — pan-fried possum tails. Today’s Georgia boasts Paula Dean, the queen of southern lard-ass cookery whose nemesis appears to be not “Lyndon Johnson and the communists,” but rather her own tongue (the Times has a few choice seconds in the clip below). Sadly, Paula and her endorsements for cookware, salt, sugar, cheese and a diabetes drug, went down in flames the same week. Neat timing.
