Our friend Paul sent us the link to the video below. It’s about sports but there is really great Kevin Sylvester class stuff in it. It’s interesting to learn that ever so nascent social democracy in Brazil seems to be copying every stupid trickle-down sports initiative that we in the west have tried, just like South Africa did for the last World Cup. Not enough books in school libraries? Let’s hold a celebrity golf tournament! Urban transportation need spritzing up? Let’s encourage some private benefactor buy a sports franchise and then build him a stadium with public money. The fans will need public transport to get to the games. Let’s hold the Pan-Am games, which will, of course put our town on the map. And if those games need a “state-of-the-art” field hockey venue, well one of our universities has a natural grass sports field that is just waiting to be paved and astroturfed. Etc. Etc. We’ve told the world ad nauseam that this kind of horseshit is the path to becoming “world class.” Surprise, surprise when they follow our absurd lead.
“This video was recorded right before the recent protests started, but with all of this going on, it becomes even more evident that the World Cup and the Olympics should not be our priority. The world has to know about what's really going on. Please share. I know this is a brief overview, so if you want to know more about the problems discussed in the video, please check the links below:”
