We were alerted to this story about Michael Prue and his new Essex County stomping grounds by a Facebunk friend. According to the story, Michael has become a pitchman for the “Sun Parlour”:
“… Amherstburg and Essex County have turned out to be everything Prue hoped they would be. He’s not just a fan. He’s a pitchman, a proselytizer, who spreads the good news — backed by a collection of house photos — whenever he meets friends in Toronto. ‘Don’t be crazy. Buy down here for a quarter of the price,’ he tells Torontonians contemplating cottage country properties. ‘You can buy something many times larger and nicer for the same price,’ he advises. ‘I tell them they can pocket tons of money and they’re really intrigued.’”

Interesting. It's nice to hear that Michael is happy in retirement. The Michael Prue Story in Beaches-East York should have ended differently. His thirteen years in the Legislature was part of almost four decades of continuous provincial representation by the Party of Humanity in Beaches-East York. A lot of Trumpalumps-before-their-time got vanquished in the process. First, the Wardle clan got sent packing in the Bryden era. In the Prue years there was more fun than most political trench warriors ever have in an entire lifetime. You had to be there for the 2003 end of Michael Tziretas. It featured a public meeting packed with Liberals angry over the Tziretas-Van Dette Baldrichian plan to put East York back on the map through federal riding gerrymandering. It led to a microphone wrestling match between Maria Minna and Tziretas and ended with a Michael Prue walkoff career-ending Tziretas dismissal (no bat flip necessary). All that was long ago and part of a Fool's Errand now over.
There are some troubling things here, though. The idea that retirement means pulling up stakes and cashing in on the Toronto real estate frenzy is not for everyone, particularly those with a proclivity to undergo an initial blinding rapture when shown some Florida swampland; I have known a few people with that affliction. I do wish Michael the best of luck with Essex County. Sadly, they got Michael and Toronto ended up with Nick Kouvalis, which is hardly a fair bargain. http://joebriggsplace.blogspot.ca/2011/01/political-memoirs-chapter-1-ney-nick.html
Here’s the video showing what Toronto got in return for Michael:
While the Windsor area is not Florida swampland, anyone considering a move from high ground to the Essex County lowlands should consult their homeowner’s insurance first. Michael was lucky to avoid the horror of knob and tube wiring in tornado-plagued Goderich. However, As Nick points out in the video, the Windsor area is susceptible to bouts of flooding—a problem that will be probably exacerbated by global warming.
