The boss claims that we may be moving again soon. Property values are going through the roof and our neighbourhood is not the place it used to be. I’m told the shorthand for this invasion is the “new demographic.” It all recalls the time we left Simcoe County 40 years ago just around the time Richard Nixon and Earl Butz decided to sell off all the government surplus wheat to Russia. With one stroke of the pen, they started the transformation of North American agriculture into the monstrosity it is today. The immediate result was a wheat-planting frenzy in the fall of 1972. People ploughed up every spare inch of land. Lots of local farmers planted their lawns and gardens. Urban Americans are following suit these days. There’s a story in today’s New York Times about front yard gardens and the brouhaha they cause in Orlando and other notable American cities. NOTE TO THE BOSS: Cross Orlando off our list of relocation destinations.
